IBS is less a distinct condition than a collection of sometimes contradictory symptoms, such as diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain and cramping—without evidence of a more serious diagnosis such as Crohn’s disease or leaky gut. The one unifying theme is irregular bowel movements, which could be caused by many factors. Because IBS is such a vague condition, treatment often requires a more generalized approach.
