Modified Citrus Pectin and Galectin-3

Many years of scientific and clinical research demonstrate that Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP) is a powerful and natural cancer fighter. Once known solely for this benefit, newer studies have established its value for inflammatory and fibrosis related conditions like cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, liver cirrhosis, diabetes and arthritis. This is because MCP is a natural blocker of
Galectin-3.

In the last few decades, hundreds of studies have proven that Galectin-3 plays a role in cancer development. In small amounts, galectins are perfectly healthy and actually aid cellular communication, and healthy growth and development. However, studies show that excess Galectin-3 in the body directly promotes unhealthy cell behaviors such as inflammation, uncontrolled abnormal cell growth, colony formation (tumors) and metastasis, among others.

Galectin-3 Testing for Health and Disease

The Galectin-3 serum blood test is a significant biomarker used to measure the risk, progression and cardiovascular disease, metastatic cancer and conditions related to inflammation and fibrosis. Because scientists and medical doctors recognize Galectin-3 as a significant target in the management and treatment of these conditions, Galectin-3 testing is an important addition to routine screening panels. The test itself is inexpensive and covered by most health insurance carriers.

Galectin-3 Reference Ranges

This chart explains Galectin-3 test results which are measured as nanogram/millileter (ng/ml).

Where to test?

For patients: Galectin-3 blood tests must be ordered from a standard medical lab by your primary care physician or health provider. For complete testing information, test interpretation and referral materials to take to your doctor, contact client services at Health Diagnostics Laboratory (1-877-443-5227).

For practitioners: LabCorp of America offers Galectin-3 testing with other routine serum tests. Galectin-3 test code is 004110. Health Diagnostics Laboratory (1-877-443-5227) also offers Galectin-3 testing and provides detailed information to assist in interpretation and analysis, along with information on targeted health solutions for addressing elevated Galectin-3.

  1. How much of the MCP should I use daily to start the detox process?
    Thanks,
    Ed

  2. I understand from the article that Galectin-3 plays a role in normal cellular communication and organization. Are there downside risks to increasing my intake of MCP as I work to control a rising PSA (post-prostatectomy)?

    • Dear John,

The recommended dosage is 5 to 15 grams per day. There is no downside to taking up to 15 grams, more than that can cause slight stomach discomfort in some individuals.

      Best,

  3. I had a PSA test result of 5.41. I had a DRE from a urologist who said there is an abnormality. He ordered a biopsy, but I have opted out of that for now. My older brother has PC and a younger brother already had a radical prostatectomy. I am 70 years old and have diabetes II and cardiac issues. I believe my diabetes was caused by the use of statins and am about to discuss this issue with my primary care physician. I am educating myself in many areas beside PC on the insistance of my older brother, who is awaiting approval of HIFU in the USA. I am convinced that a naturalistic and integrative approach is more important to my quality of life issues as they now stand than a direct treatment approach. I am going to discuss this with my pcp also. I do not feel an urgency to move aggresively at this time. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    • Integrative medicine is the combination of practices and methods of alternative medicine with evidence based medicine. It sounds like you’re doing a good job of looking at both sides, talking with your doctor, doing research and deciding what is best for you. Medical decisions are very personal and very different for each individual, such as you have seen with your brothers and yourself. Wishing you the best on your journey of health.

  4. Hi, I want to start a detox for heavy metals. I read that Modified Citrus Pectin helps the body chelate heavy metals without remove the vital minerals such as calcium, magesium and potassium. Have there been any independent studies done that demonstrate effective chelation of mercury, lead, etc.? Thanks

    Eddie G.

    • We cannot give medical advice online. But there have been several studies related to detoxification of heavy metals using MCP (modified citrus pectin). If you would like to read the abstract (summary) of each of the studies you can find the link on dreliaz.org by going to the “Science and Research” section and clicking on “Modified Citrus Pectin Research”. Scroll down and you will see the titles of the studies, done in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Also go to this link http://www.dreliaz.org/recommended-product/for-chelation-and-detoxification/ for more information.

  5. Has MCP shown any benefit for peripheral neuropathy brought on by Vitamin B-6 toxicity? Is there another product you provide that might better fit the bill?
    Thank you.

    • Thank you for your question. We are not able to make recommendations for specific diseases. However we have products that offer specific cellular health benefits that target the systems that are challenged in your situation. Padma Basic is a Tibetan herbal formula with powerful antioxidant properties along with the promotion of healthy peripheral circulation. Honopure has a neuroprotective effect along with antioxidant properties. Please see the research section of dreliaz.org for more information on research that has been done on the ingredients of these products.

  6. Hello
I have a large complex ovarian cyst, and I am looking for natural ways to cure it instead of surgery. Could you please suggest a good naturopath practitioner in UK?

    Thank you very much

    • Hi Paola, Thank you for your question, and we are sorry to hear you are experiencing this difficult condition. Due to the area in which you live, we are not aware of a specific practitioner to refer you to. We would suggest visiting the UK Naturopathy Directory. They have many great resources to start with. We wish you the best on your road to recovery.

  7. Hello, Since mcp is non organic is it safe to assume that it is full of pesticide residue?
    Thank you.

    • The modified citrus pectin used has been tested multiple times and found to be negative for pesticide residues. Because it undergoes special processing to reduce the size of the molecule, enabling it to be absorbed into the circulation, it is highly purified.
